ALAMEDA — While the Raiders are determining which players don’t fit into their short-term plans, they have decided to lock up center Rodney Hudson for the longterm.

Hudson has agreed to a three-year contract extension worth $33.4 million that will make him the league’s highest paid center. The deal contains $24.4 million in guarantees.

The contract was first reported by NFL Network, confirmed by the Bay Area News Group and later announced by the Raiders.

Hudson, 30, has consistently graded out as one of the NFL’s top centers according to Profootballfocus and is the unquestioned leader of the offensive line, responsible for all blocking assignments and line calls.

The first big-strike signing by former Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie, Hudson was signed to a five-year, $44.5 million contract in 2015. He played from 2011 through 2014 with the Kansas City Chiefs and was originally a second-round draft pick out of Florida State.

The new contract, which makes Hudson’s average salary $11.125, comes in ahead of Mitch Morse, signed by Buffalo from Kansas City during free agency for an average of $11.1 million. It ties Hudson to the Raiders through 2022 and the move to Las Vegas.

In four seasons with the Raiders, Hudson made 61 of 64 starts, including every game for the last three seasons. He has played through injuries that included a kidney stone in 2017, a season that culminated in Hudson making his second Pro Bowl.

Because of the way Hudson works and prepares, he was a favorite of line coach Mike Tice and Jack Del Rio and later Tom Cable and coach Jon Gruden.
